Chanraksmi Khuam Pel Awarded 2018 Phillips-Baber Share the Wealth Scholarship.

2018 Mar 6

Chanraksmi Khuam Pel of Kingsland, Georgia, has earned the 2018 Phillips-Baber Share the Wealth Scholarship.

The Phillips-Baber Share the Wealth Scholarship is presented each year to an undergraduate VSU student pursuing a degree in health and physical education.

Pel is a Georgia HOPE (Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally) Scholar, secretary of VSU's Health and Physical Education Club, and an active member of the Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and Kappa Delta Pi: International Honor Society in Education. He has served his community as a Special Olympics and Navy Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Kings Bay Youth Center volunteer. He recently gained classroom experience working with students at Moulton Branch Elementary School and Valdosta High School in Valdosta, Georgia, and Hahira Middle School in Hahira, Georgia.

"If I can make a positive difference in the lives of my students and leave them with a knowledge-filled, fun experience, then I have accomplished my goal," he said. "As an educator I believe that each student is unique in many ways, and if we teach the students through a holistic view, they can achieve anything. We, as educators, are the students' role model. If we can show and teach our students to stay healthy and fit through lifelong learning and commitment, we have done our jobs. When the students apply this knowledge on a lifelong aspect, then we have succeeded."

The Phillips-Baber Share the Wealth Scholarship was established in 2007 to honor two long-time Share the Wealth Physical Education Conference directors, Judy Phillips and Dr. Deb Baber. This annual conference has been recognized by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education as the premier hands-on physical education conference in the United States and annually attracts attendees from all across the country and around the world.
